I failed hard this year at the 50bookchallenge and the 15000page challenge, so I'm starting over again. Yep, just like that--from December 1st of this year until December 1st of 2009, I will be doing the 50-book-challenge. Perhaps it's against the rules, but whatever.....I don't think anyone will really have too much of a problem with it. At least, I hope not.
In any case, I'm going to post my list here, in this entry, until January 2009, at which point I will transfer the whole thing to the online communities, explaining when I started, etc.
1. The Book of the Dead, by Douglas Preson and Lincoln Child. Warner Books, 452 pages. Suspense/forensics. Book goal: 2% finished. Pages goal: 3.013333% finished.
2. The Science of Vampires, by Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D. Berkeley Publishing Group, 255 pages. Occult/supernatural. Book goal: 4% finished. Pages goal: At 707 pages total, I'm 4.713333% done.

I've been using the time to catch up on the challenge reading (both 15000pages and 50bookchallenge), because I'm severely behind; however, the Stephenie Meyer books (all but Breaking Dawn, of course) have given me a good boost over the past several days. I do believe I finished all three Twilight novels in...five days. The third book was done in about twelve hours.
But, on to the purpose of this entry (a full, bulky update will come later, because I still have to organize some book information, etc.):
*clears throat*
Dear Maggie Shayne,
You are almost as ridiculous as Chad Corrie--but you've got vampires, and a much better sense of grammar and punctuation. Your writing style is cliched and immature, but what can you do? There's only so much that the genre of paranormal romance can take before some silly writer crushes everything that's good about it. Anyway, I just have to say that I'm reading Demon's Kiss right now, and I'm very amused by the fact that you've used The Epic of Gilgamesh as the "vampire creation myth." [see pages 270-271] I like that, even though it's silly.
But sweet Jesus, I've just flipped a page or two...and you've lost me. You ignorant hack. Now you've done it. *facepalm*
Ms. Shayne, did you brush up on your history before you wrote this book? If you want to twist the past around for literary reasons, that's awesome--IF you can do it convincingly. Putting Sumeria and Egypt alongside one another in time isn't a grave offense. But let me go through your timeline and point out your worst mistake.
So, your character says that Gilgamesh became the first vampire. Whatever. Fine. He then says that a slave-boy taken from Utnapishtim (if the legend says he HAD slaves, mind you) by a different man of the same time period became Dracula. He goes on to say that Dracula created a vampire out of Rhiannon, who was the daughter of an Egytian pharoah. Am I really the only one who sees what's wrong here?????? The only one of these characters/people whose human births DID NOT take place "Before Common Era" was DRACULA (who was, in fact, a real person--but not a vampire), whose human birth took place on the 14th of November, in the year 1431 A.D.!!!!! That's only about 577 years before the present time!!!!!!!!
I am certain, now, that I will never read another one of your books.
Sincerely, raellebird.
